For years, strange and mysterious stories have been told in the state of Maine - spirits that haunt the lonely corners, cryptids that prowl the woods, occult groups moving in the shadows, and extraterrestrial beings who soar the skies. Malevolent Maine investigates and reports on these stories and urban legends and attempts to shine a light in the dark corners where secrets hide.
Malevolent Maine is a horror anthology podcast that tells the story of myths and urban legends from around the state of Maine with a focus on the odd and the strange. The show follows an investigative team as they look into these stories, researching the past, interviewing subjects in the present, and trying to pull back the veil of the secret truths that hide in the shadows. More Unsolved Mysteries than Ghost Hunters, the show is hosted by Chris Estes, who along with Lucas Knight and Tom Wilson, serve as the lead investigators and pass on the dark truths they discover. Season 1 dealt with esoteric cults, strange creatures in the woods, lost souls, and insidious images that drive a person insane.
Each episode is self-contained, though there are occasional crossovers to past episodes. The show is free to listen to, with added financial support from listeners via Patreon. Season 1 released every two weeks and contained 20 episodes, ranging from 15 to 40 minutes in length. Season 2 began February 15th, will consist of 20 episodes, released every two weeks, 30-40 minutes long.
Malevolent Maine avoids explicit language but does deal with mature themes such as violence, mutilation, and dark magic. While not exactly kid-friendly, we strive to be accessible by a large audience. We’d rank ourselves PG-13 for gore, ghosts, and other ghastly stuff. We highly encourage caregivers to listen to the show beforehand to ensure it is appropriate for younger audiences.
Because of the nature of all things dark and scary, each episode contains trigger warnings in their descriptions. These usually include blood/gore, demonic/Satanic imagery, or other horrifying elements.
Season 1 was released in May of 2022, and released episodes every other week until it ended with Episode 20 in January of 2023. Five short mini-episodes - Malevolent Minutes - as well as a holiday special were released as bonus content. Season 2 began in February of 2023 and will release new episodes every two weeks. All released episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Podchaser, and on almost any podcast app.
Transcripts are available for each episode.
Chris Estes, Lucas Knight, and Tom Wilson had the idea for Malevolent Maine in 2021 while they were teaching high school students about urban legends. The original plan was to have students write their own urban legends after studying established ones. The boys wrote a few themselves to use as examples, but then soon found themselves obsessed with writing more and more, and it quickly outgrew the initial assignment. During 2022, while stuck at home due to Covid quarantining, the idea emerged to turn it into a podcast.
Malevolent Maine is self-funded by the creators, but we do accept support through Patreon. Members of our Malevolent Mob get early access to episodes, exclusive side stories like The Black Tarot, and behind the scenes extras.
